As many venture onto alternative life paths - what can be scary is the feeling of being alone on new quests for spiritual structure. The local cozy Church group feeling is almost impossible to replicate and it is not the intention to try to do so at the Gyreum - or to try to take on the mantle of responsibility over lives that a Church would assume - the intention is to simply create a Sunday morning feeling of uplift, of some interesting mind awakening thoughts, that own up to the vagaries of our lives, that explore the questions of whether for example we might live beyond this life, or fizzle away and what either might mean.
The hope is to have a bold band of people speak - some with more credentials than others - some new to pulpit or soap box - some old faces - Agnostics, Ecologists, Christians, Uncertainty-ists, Specialists who can weave spirit into their field of interest. The important notion is that the Pastor, Know-It-All, Rabbi, Showgirl whoever would aim toward some element of a transcendent moment ù so that it is not simply "a talk."
It might some times involve music, some prayer, some movement, some interaction or none.
I have been spellbound by some great preachers from many religions, it is that which inspires Second Sunday and usually they are story tellers rather than utterers of platitudes - rarely are they exponents of one spiritual path or a solitary form of salvation and they are more than often comical.
In a time when communities are sundering - perhaps something like this eclectic monthly gathering can help some people make new shapes in their own uncertainties and that of the wide world. I reckon none of this urge to create these Eventsis simply a reaction to other religions but an owning up to the inability to be part of anything - yet with some yearning to participate in shared wonderment.
Like all things spiritual there is cash involved - a charge but it includes a big bowl of soup - a large chunk of bread - and covers the running costs.
