Father Bernard Lynch
GOD, SEX & DEATH
14 MAY 12:00 PM
Fr. Bernard is an out gay Roman Catholic Priest who has had his troubles with the Catholic Church and retains yet some loyalty to it. He is best known for his controversial pastoral care work in the fleshpots of New York in the early and unknown days of AIDS. The diocese of NYC did not like his work and his outspoken views around the issue - so they made life so difficult for him that he had to leave. Charges of abuse were fabricated against Fr. Lynch - though he won his innocence and was cleared at a trial the ordeal left a sour taste and he moved to London where he now lives with his partner, works as a psycho-therapist and performs marriage ceremonies for same sex couples. He is extremely funny while yet being political and has survived the famous outrageous outing Gay Byrne wrought upon him on the Late Late Show many moons ago.
Bernard grew up in Ennis, as a priest worked with the Bemba people for two years in Zambia. He was Theological Consultant to the Board of Directors of Dignity New York -- an organisation for Lesbian, Gay, Transgendered and Bisexual Catholics. He founded the AIDS/HIV Ministry of Dignity New York in 1982, which continues its work to the present day.
For over ten years Bernard was a member of the Mayor of New York's voluntary Task Force on HIV/AIDS, and was the only Roman Catholic priest to testify before the City Council for the successful passage of Civil Rights legislation for the LGTB community.
He has been three times profiled on Channel Four: 'AIDS -- A Priest's Testament' 1987. In December 1989, Channel Four featured another two documentaries on his "prophetic" witness, 'A Priest on Trial' and 'Soul Survivor.'
In February 1993 his book, 'A Priest on Trial' was published by Bloomsbury, London. Since then he has contributed continuously to books and articles on Spirituality, Sexuality and the Search for God, as well as participating in TV and Radio programmes on similar subjects. He continues to work with people living with HIV/AIDS both in New York and the U.K.
